Join the Water Institute at UNC  from 15 – 19 May 2017 for the 19th International Symposium on Health-Related Water Microbiology, organized by the International Water Society (IWA) Specialist Group on Health-Related Water Microbiology (HRWM) biennially.

In 2017, the Symposium will run concurrently with UNC’s annual Water Microbiology Conference (15-17 May 2017) to create a forum for researchers and practitioners focused on microbiology and public health to come together around the intersection of the two.

IWA members are invited to participate in all Water Microbiology Conference sessions as well as a dedicated track exclusive to members of the IWA Specialist Group on Health-Related Water Microbiology.

Call for Papers

Interested in sharing your work with your peers? Submissions are not being accepted for various presentation formats through 15 January 2017. Opportunities for 15 minute verbal presentations and day-long poster displays are available for both events. Please visit the abstract submission page for more information on Conference themes and to submit your abstract.

Side Event Proposals

Side events offer convening organizations the flexibility to propose the format and agenda of their session as they see fit within the planned UNC Water Microbiology Conference program. Some examples of successful side events are panel discussions, roundtables and small group workshops. These sessions are loosely defined to allow for your creativity. Side events vary in length of either 90 minutes or 3 hours long, allowing for in depth discussion and engagement. Visit the side event submission page for more information.

Willie Grabow Young Investigator Award Nominations & Bursary Applications

The IWA-HRWM Willie Grabow Young Investigator Award is made for the purpose of assisting and encouraging young scientists, who are doing outstanding research in the field of health-related water microbiology, specifically in developing countries. The award consists of a stipend for travel, lodging and registration costs for the HRWM Symposium the year of the award (not to exceed $4,000USD). The Award winner will be asked to give a presentation on their work applicable to developing countries during the Symposium. A candidate must be nominated. Nominators may be HRWM members, schools or other organizations involved in the Health Related Water Microbiology field. Up to 3 bursary awards of $900 are also available for individuals seeking travel funding. To learn more, visit please visit the website.
